OpenAI launches Australian youth safety blueprint
OpenAI released an Australian Youth Safety Blueprint on September 18, outlining policy proposals and product safeguards for young people, as it continues to roll out ChatGPT for Teens in Australia after starting the launch in August.
The blueprint sets out six pillars, including AI literacy, age-appropriate safeguards, privacy-protective age assurance, links to real-world crisis support, and accessible parental controls.
OpenAI said the teen experience applies by default to users identified as aged 13 to 17.
The move comes as Australia’s eSafety Commissioner oversees online safety across digital services and has published guidance on age limits and underage users.
It also comes as Australia has moved toward an under-16 social media ban, though current public guidance does not explicitly say whether generative AI services would be covered.
