Kling AI averaged 7.8 million monthly active users OpenAI kills Sora as Kling pulls ahead in AI videoin March vs. 4.7 million for Sora.
OpenAI said it is shutting Sora to streamline its product road map and shift resources to robotics, after the app generated just US$1.4 million in global net in-app revenue since launch.
Kuaishou said Kling AI generated 340 million yuan (US$49.37 million) in Q4 revenue, and it expects annual revenue to more than double this year.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Kling’s growth comes from an AI-first parent company that spends big on infrastructure
- Kling AI operates as video generation infrastructure for fields such as marketing, e-commerce, and film, rather than a standalone app 1.
- Kuaishou Technology (a Beijing-based internet company that owns Kling AI) already uses AI in its core business. Management said generative recommendation models plus intelligent bidding models drove about 5% growth in domestic online marketing services revenue in Q4 2025 1.
- That profitable base bankrolls large spending. Kuaishou’s planned 2026 capital expenditure (CapEx) is about 26 billion yuan 1.
- Momentum followed. Kling’s annualized revenue run rate topped $300 million in January, higher than the Sora app’s lifetime revenue 1.
Single-purpose AI apps can have a hard time, while ecosystem results need careful comparisons
- Sora’s shutdown underscores how hard it is to make money from single-function AI tools. Sensor Tower data puts Sora at US$1.4 million in global net in-app revenue since launch, compared with US$1.9 billion for ChatGPT over the same period [News Article].
- A more durable path can come from weaving AI into an existing high-traffic business. That can create a flywheel effect (where gains in one part of the business reinforce growth in another) 1.
- Kuaishou’s social platform offers distribution plus funding for AI tools, which can improve platform performance and profits 1.
- Management said end-to-end generative recommendation technology in e-commerce scenarios helped propel gross merchandise value (GMV) growth across e-commerce scenarios in Q4 2025, though the company did not quantify the impact 1.
- This suggests the next AI race will favor deep integration inside profitable businesses over standalone demos.
