OpenAI, Jony Ive’s AI device face delays due to tech challenges

OpenAI’s upcoming portable AI device, designed with former Apple designer Jony Ive, is facing technical challenges that could delay its planned launch next year, according to the Financial Times.

Ive, known for his work on Apple products, merged his design firm io with OpenAI in a US$6.5 billion deal, and together with his LoveFrom collective, took on broad creative and design responsibilities across both companies.

The prototype uses cameras and microphones to capture video and audio cues from users’ environments, but OpenAI is reportedly struggling with software development and the infrastructure needed to support the product.

Key issues include shaping the assistant’s on-device personality, addressing privacy concerns, and managing the high computing requirements needed to run AI models at scale.

OpenAI has signed a manufacturing deal with Luxshare and has approached Goertek about supplying components.

Late last month, the company also agreed to a US$100 billion deal to buy millions of Nvidia chips to meet its growing compute demands.
