OpenAI invests in startup tackling AI-driven bio threats
OpenAI has led a US$15 million seed investment in Red Queen Bio, a startup focused on blocking bad actors from creating biological weapons powered by AI.
Red Queen Bio spun out from Helix Nano and aims to use AI models and lab experiments to identify and address emerging biosecurity threats.
OpenAI said the investment is part of its broader strategy to support startups addressing AI-related risks and previously backed Valthos, a New York-based biosecurity software startup.
OpenAI’s chief compliance officer and unconflicted board members approved the Red Queen Bio investment.
Sam Altman and board member Nicole Seligman, both prior investors in Helix Nano, will receive shares as part of the deal but did not join the approval process.
Other backers in the round include Cerberus Ventures, Fifty Years, and Halcyon Futures.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Red Queen Bio’s actual product is still uncertain despite OpenAI’s backing
- Red Queen Bio spun out from Helix Nano 1. A different company called Red Queen Therapeutics exists with $55 million from Apple Tree Partners (a life sciences venture capital firm) and is developing stapled lipopeptides (engineered peptides stabilized with chemical staples to improve potency and durability) as antiviral treatments 12.
- The therapeutics firm has RQ-01, a COVID-19 drug candidate, that completed a Phase 1 trial (a first-in-human safety study). It also has BARDA funding for pan-influenza work and expanded licensing from Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (a research and treatment center) 3.
- Press coverage describes Red Queen Bio as focused on AI biosecurity defenses, not therapeutics. It shares few details on methods or traction beyond a $15 million seed round 4.
- Links between the two entities remain unclear. The $15 million seed round may relate to OpenAI’s involvement in biosecurity. It does not confirm technical achievement 4.
Biosecurity startups can capture 2025 government contracts by tracking BARDA’s active funding programs
- BARDA runs DRIVe (the Division of Research, Innovation, and Ventures). Its EZ-BAA (a streamlined Broad Agency Announcement) offers awards under $750,000 and +Phase awards up to $20 million, with Areas of Interest that vary. The BARDA Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) supports larger advanced development projects 56.
- VITAL funds pre-exposure prophylaxis (preventive interventions taken before exposure) for respiratory viruses. Support runs through Phase 1 clinical trials (early safety studies) 7.
- Compliance-as-a-service (outsourced regulatory and security compliance) and secure cloud infrastructure companies (cloud platforms built to meet high security and compliance standards) can seek BARDA proof-of-concept funding of $50,000 to $200,000 for digital health tools and diagnostics 7.
- The BARDA Accelerator Network’s digital health hub (BARDA-backed incubators that provide guidance) offers cohort-based learning and commercialization help that startups can use while pursuing government contracts 7.
