OpenAI introduced Astra for Law on September 17, an AI product for law firms and legal technology companies.

It combines GPT-6 Astra with legal search, analysis, and writing tools, plus controls for confidential client work.

The product will initially be available to selected law firms through a Trusted Access program in ChatGPT and Codex, with application programming interface access coming later.

OpenAI said customers including Harvey, a legal AI startup, and Legora, a legal technology company, will be able to build on Astra for Law.

In tests on 200 legal research questions from the US in the private validation set of Vals AI’s Legal Research Bench, Astra for Law passed the overall correctness check on 54% of questions.

GPT-6 Astra using web search alone scored 38.7%.

OpenAI also launched 26 legal plugins, including connections to Relativity and Clio, and said ChatGPT for Word is now generally available.

The launch comes as Thomson Reuters, an information services company, previews a CoCounsel Legal connector for ChatGPT.

Separately, the American Bar Association has issued guidance on lawyers’ use of AI tools.
