OpenAI hires team behind Apple Xcode AI assistant

OpenAI has hired the team behind Alex, an AI coding assistant for Apple’s Xcode, as they join its Codex division.

Alex, founded in 2024 and backed by Y Combinator, built tools to integrate AI into Xcode for iOS and macOS.

The move follows Apple’s recent updates to Xcode that added native AI features, including ChatGPT integration.

Alex’s founder Daniel Edrisian said the team will now work on OpenAI’s coding products.

The Alex app will stop new downloads after October 1 but remain available for current users without new features. It is unclear if all three Alex team members are joining.

OpenAI has previously hired teams from startups rather than acquiring companies outright and recently announced the US$1.1 billion acquisition of Statsig.
