OpenAI has hired former Uber India and South Asia president Prabhjeet Singh as its first managing director for India.

Singh will join in September and oversee consumer growth, enterprise adoption, partnerships, regulatory engagement, and operations in the country.

At Uber, Singh led the ride-hailing company’s mobility business and safety initiatives across India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh.

He also helped expand Uber into new cities and scale its Auto and Moto services in India.

The appointment is part of OpenAI’s expansion in India.

The company opened its first office in New Delhi in August 2025 and has said it plans offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru.

OpenAI has described India as its second-largest market after the US.

OpenAI has also announced local partnerships, including with Pine Labs to automate settlement workflows, JioHotstar for conversational search, and Tata Group for AI-ready data-center capacity.

It also said Indian institutions would receive more than 100,000 ChatGPT Edu licenses.
