OpenAI hires Coinbase policy executive for EMEA
Tom Duff Gordon has left Coinbase, where he was vice president of international policy for nearly four years, to join OpenAI as head of EMEA policy, a Coinbase spokesperson said.
Before Coinbase, Duff Gordon spent about 8.5 years at Credit Suisse.
Duff Gordon had recently pointed out that some UK banks were blocking customers from using crypto services offered by firms registered with the Financial Conduct Authority, saying banks were not distinguishing them from higher-risk operators.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Coinbase policy lead leaves as global crypto rules mature
- Tom Duff Gordon helped shape Coinbase’s “international-first” strategy after unclear U.S. regulation created uncertainty 1.
- He exits as many across crypto expect 2026 to turn draft policies into laws in several jurisdictions, shifting effort from debate to rollout 2.
Crypto regulatory lessons move into AI
- Duff Gordon’s move suggests AI companies are hiring people who have handled crypto policy fights across multiple jurisdictions in recent years 3.
- This could form a “crypto-to-AI” hiring track, since experience with frameworks such as the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation may carry weight as AI legislation emerges 2. For crypto, it also means losing a veteran policy expert as complex implementation work begins 2.
