OpenAI grants some Japanese banks GPT-5.5 access

Some Japanese financial institutions were granted access to OpenAI’s GPT-5.5 model to help defend against cyberattacks, Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama said on Friday after meeting OpenAI chief strategy officer Jason Kwon in Tokyo.

Katayama called the access “a welcome development and a big step forward” in strengthening Japanese financial institutions’ cyber defence.

However, she did not identify which institutions received it.

Japan’s three biggest banks, MUFG Bank, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp, and Mizuho Bank, were expected to gain access to the model, which OpenAI had made available only to trusted partners.
