OpenAI, Foxconn partner to strengthen AI hardware supply chain

OpenAI and Foxconn have agreed to collaborate on designing and preparing for potential manufacturing of AI infrastructure hardware in the US.

Foxconn will use OpenAI’s insights on hardware needs to inform its design and development efforts for data center equipment at its US facilities.

The agreement does not include purchase commitments or financial obligations, but gives OpenAI early access to evaluate the new systems and the option to buy them.

The initiative will focus on co-designing several generations of AI data center racks, expanding domestic sourcing, and manufacturing key components like cabling, networking, cooling, and power systems in the US.

Both companies said the collaboration aims to strengthen US supply chains and accelerate the deployment of advanced AI infrastructure.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Foxconn’s US manufacturing record raises doubts about near-term production

  • Foxconn’s Wisconsin project started as a $10 billion plan with 13,000 jobs 1. Targets slipped as the site pivoted from flat-panel displays to Gen 6 panels, later AI technology, then storage 1.
  • Foxconn built some servers at the site 1. The website lists plants in Wisconsin, Ohio, Texas, Virginia, and Indiana 1. The OpenAI deal disclosed no dollar figures; it gets early access to test data center hardware and an option to buy 2.
  • Foxconn’s CEO cited pressure from US trade rules and tariffs 3. He cast the deal as supply chain adjustments, which implies a geopolitical hedge with uncertain US scale 3.

US component makers can chase Foxconn’s growing rack assembly demand

  • Cloud and Networking Products brings in 41% of revenue 3. AI server sales rose 60% year over year, while rack assembly could jump 300% in Q3 2025 3.
  • Management sees 2025 AI server revenue above $33 billion 3. That will drive orders for cabling, power gear, and networking hardware plus cooling, which the OpenAI deal targets for US sourcing 2.
  • Vendors can register on Foxconn’s Mexico CAPIM portal for direct materials and production processes 4. It also covers Maintenance, Repair, and Operations (MRO) 4. US qualification steps are not public, so outreach to plants may be needed 4.
  • IT teams building private AI should watch Foxconn’s modular data centers with TECO (a Taiwan-based industrial equipment manufacturer) 3. A US build could speed deployment versus conventional projects 3.
