OpenAI forecasts $5b loss as $200 ChatGPT Pro struggles
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced financial losses tied to the US$200-per-month ChatGPT Pro plan.
Altman said on X that he set the subscription price with the expectation of profitability.
The ChatGPT Pro tier, introduced in late 2024, provides access to upgraded AI capabilities and includes tools like the Sora video generator.
OpenAI is projected to incur losses of US$5 billion in 2024, compared to an estimated revenue of US$3.7 billion.
These challenges arise from operational expenses, including staffing, office costs, and AI infrastructure. Operating ChatGPT at peak usage costs around US$700,000 daily.
To address this, OpenAI is seeking additional funding, restructuring and considering higher subscription pieces.
