OpenAI faces probe by US state attorneys general

OpenAI is cooperating with an investigation by a coalition of US state attorneys general that requested information on topics related to the AI company, adding to its legal troubles.

The company did not say what information the coalition sought or which states were involved, and public details of the probe are limited.

Separately, a bipartisan coalition of 42 attorneys general urged OpenAI and other tech companies in December 2025 to add chatbot safeguards for children and vulnerable people.

OpenAI is also facing a Florida civil lawsuit filed in state court on June 1. The suit accuses OpenAI and chief executive Sam Altman of deceptive and unfair trade practices, negligence, product liability, fraudulent misrepresentation, and public nuisance, and seeks penalties and a court order.

The Florida complaint says more than 20 lawsuits have been filed over alleged ChatGPT-related harms, including cases tied to suicides, delusions, and shootings.

Separately, the Federal Trade Commission opened an inquiry into OpenAI in 2023 over possible consumer-protection issues.

OpenAI also said this week it had confidentially filed for an initial public offering.
