OpenAI eyes browser, social app, brain tech investment
OpenAI is eyeing ambitious new projects, including an AI-powered web browser, a social media platform, and even a potential investment in a brain-computer interface startup.
While no deal has been finalized, the moves signal the company’s plans to expand beyond ChatGPT.
During a meeting with tech reporters in San Francisco, CEO Sam Altman and other executives outlined OpenAI’s broader ambitions.
They said incoming CEO of applications, Fidji Simo, will lead the push into consumer apps outside of ChatGPT.
The company is also exploring growth in areas such as search, hardware, enterprise software, data centers, robotics, and energy.
Some industry observers believe OpenAI may eventually go public to fund these expanding initiatives.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ OpenAI follows the tech giant playbook of strategic diversification through major acquisitions
OpenAI’s $6.5 billion acquisition of Jony Ive’s hardware startup iO in 2025 represents a classic tech company evolution strategy1.
The deal mirrors how companies like Google transformed from search-focused businesses into diversified technology conglomerates through strategic acquisitions and vertical integration.
OpenAI’s funding trajectory supports this expansion approach. The company raised approximately $11 billion and transitioned from a non-profit to a capped-profit model in 2019 specifically to attract the investment needed for such ambitious growth2.
This approach of using significant capital to fund diversification into hardware, enterprise software, and consumer applications has historically been how software companies build sustainable competitive advantages.
The iO acquisition brings former Apple executives and designers into OpenAI’s orbit, providing the expertise necessary to compete in consumer hardware markets where design and user experience are critical differentiators.
2️⃣ AI model performance parity drives strategic pivot to the application layer
OpenAI’s expansion beyond ChatGPT reflects a fundamental shift in the AI landscape where cutting-edge models no longer provide sustained competitive advantages.
