OpenAI expects $278b negative free cash flow by 2030
OpenAI expects negative free cash flow of US$278 billion from 2026 to 2030 as it increases spending on computing power and infrastructure, according to a company presentation.
The presentation projected revenue would rise from US$36 billion this year to US$350 billion in 2030. It also projected cumulative spending on compute and infrastructure would reach about US$856 billion by then.
That spending comes as OpenAI expands infrastructure, including its previously announced Stargate project. Stargate includes five new US data centers targeting 10 gigawatts of AI capacity.
For comparison, Microsoft said it expected to spend US$80 billion on AI data centers in fiscal 2025.
OpenAI is also seeking fresh funding.
A reported US$110 billion funding round this year drew investment from Amazon, Nvidia, and SoftBank. SoftBank later said it had completed an additional US$22.5 billion investment.
Earlier this week, OpenAI reportedly held talks with investors that could value the company at about US$1.2 trillion ahead of a potential listing.
OpenAI filed confidentially for an initial public offering in June, but CEO Sam Altman said on September 19 that it would not go public in 2026 because of AI safety concerns.
