OpenAI is expected to release its language model, GPT-5, in early August 2025, according to sources familiar with the company’s plans.

CEO Sam Altman confirmed the upcoming release during a podcast and mentioned the model’s new capabilities.

Altman indicated that GPT-5 will integrate various technologies, including reasoning capabilities not previously associated with the GPT series.

The model will be available in multiple versions, including mini and nano, through OpenAI’s API and some versions via ChatGPT.

The launch timeline for GPT-5 has experienced testing delays, with ongoing final safety checks and reviews.

Altman also said that GPT-5 will require further optimization after its initial release.

As of this publication, OpenAI has not provided a specific launch date for GPT-5.

In a separate development, OpenAI is set to launch an open-weight language model by the end of July. This model, similar to o3 mini, will be the first from OpenAI since GPT-2 in 2019.
