OpenAI expands teen safeguards in ChatGPT
OpenAI said on July 17 that it was expanding teen safeguards in ChatGPT.
The changes include letting parents with linked teen accounts enable Study Mode and broadening alerts when those accounts are deactivated for violating policies on violent threats or acts of violence online.
Teens identified by OpenAI’s age prediction system will continue to face stricter limits on harmful content and risky interactions, including graphic violence and dangerous roleplay.
OpenAI also said teens who spend extended time in ChatGPT will see break reminders more often.
Study Mode, which OpenAI launched in July 2025, is meant to build critical thinking by asking students guiding questions and offering structured explanations rather than simply giving answers.
The safeguards build on an age system that defaults users whose age is uncertain to the under-18 experience and may request identity document checks in some countries.
