OpenAI expands ChatGPT ads pilot to South Korea

OpenAI said on June 19 it is expanding its ChatGPT ad pilot to South Korea after earlier tests in the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

Ads will be shown only to adult users on ChatGPT Free and Go plans, while users on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans will not see them.

OpenAI said sponsored content will be labeled and kept separate from ChatGPT replies.

Advertisers will receive only aggregated metrics such as impressions and click-through rates, and they will not have access to individual users’ conversation content, chat history, or personal information.

They also will not appear in conversations about sensitive or potentially regulated topics, including mental health or politics.

Kim Kyung-hoon, OpenAI Korea’s chief representative, said ads can help expand access by letting more people use ChatGPT’s AI features without paying.
