OpenAI faces more exits in leadership reshuffle

OpenAI executives Bill Peebles and Kevin Weil said in separate X posts on April 17 that they were departing the company, adding to a recent run of leadership changes.

An OpenAI spokesperson said the company is decentralizing OpenAI for Science to move its work closer to teams building models, products, and infrastructure.

The exits follow product and business chief Fidji Simo’s medical leave and marketing chief Kate Rouch’s decision to step down, as well as COO Brad Lightcap’s transition to a “special projects” role.

Weil joined OpenAI in 2024 and later launched OpenAI for Science, while Peebles joined in 2023 and led Sora before OpenAI shut the video app last month to rein in costs and reallocate compute resources.
