OpenAI exec, ex-Slack CTO back Finnish SaaS firm’s $11.5m round

Helsinki-based SaaS company Swarmia has raised €10 million (US$11.5 million) to develop its engineering intelligence platform.

The platform provides real-time insights into product development, aiming to improve productivity and collaboration among software engineering teams.

The funding round was led by DIG Ventures and Karma Ventures, with angel investors Romain Huët, OpenAI’s head of developer experience, and Cal Henderson, co-founder and former CTO of Slack.

Founded in 2019, Swarmia helps engineering teams align their work with business goals and optimize development processes.

It combines quantitative metrics with qualitative data to provide actionable recommendations.

Clients include Docker, Webflow, and Trustpilot.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Engineering intelligence platforms are reaching a major inflection point

Swarmia’s funding comes at a pivotal moment in the software engineering intelligence (SEI) market, which is experiencing dramatic growth projections.

Gartner forecasts adoption of these platforms will jump from just 5% in 2024 to 50% by 2027, representing a massive shift in how engineering organizations operate and measure success 1.

This rapid adoption rate indicates we’re witnessing the mainstreaming of a category that was previously niche, similar to how DevOps tools transitioned from specialized to essential.

The growing focus on profitability mentioned by Swarmia’s CEO reflects broader market conditions pushing companies toward optimization rather than growth at all costs, with engineering teams increasingly required to demonstrate measurable business impact.

The involvement of high-profile angel investors from OpenAI and Slack suggests that industry leaders recognize the strategic importance of this emerging category, lending credibility to both Swarmia and the broader SEI market.

2️⃣ Engineering productivity measurement is evolving beyond traditional metrics

Swarmia’s approach addressing the “three pillars” of engineering effectiveness reflects a fundamental shift in how organizations evaluate technical teams.
