OpenAI engineer accused of planting office listening device
Saudi engineer and OpenAI employee Abdulrahman Alfozan was arrested on October 9 after allegedly hiding a recording device inside a television in an executive conference room at OpenAI’s San Francisco office, where the company is headquartered, US prosecutors said.
The US Justice Department said the 35-year-old engineer searched a productivity tool for office locations, meeting schedules, and the whereabouts of OpenAI employees.
OpenAI’s security team also found a second device in Alfozan’s unattended bag.
OpenAI said it found no evidence that Alfozan improperly accessed or extracted model weights, source code, or customer data. It remains unclear whether he recorded any information.
Prosecutors charged him with using or attempting to use a device to intercept oral communications, an offense that carries up to five years in prison and a US$250,000 fine.
California law also bars recording confidential communications without the consent of all parties, which could expose him to criminal and civil liability over private workplace meetings.
