OpenAI has decided not to release its upcoming AI model, GPT-6.1 Astra, after determining it did not meet the company’s safety standards.

Saachi Jain, head of safety systems at OpenAI, said the company has “an extremely high bar” for safety and alignment when shipping models to users.

The company also has an updated Preparedness Framework to assess whether a model is ready for release.

The decision follows an earlier Astra delay. OpenAI had slowed work on the model over cybersecurity-related capabilities, showing the company was already willing to delay its release on safety grounds.

The decision comes as model safety faces wider scrutiny across the AI industry.

Earlier this month, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called on foundation labs to slow model development over concerns that advanced systems could move beyond human control.
