OpenAI is opposing efforts by several Indian media groups to join a copyright lawsuit against the company, according to a legal filing dated Feb. 11.

The United States-based AI company, which is supported by Microsoft, denies using the content of the media groups to train its AI chatbot, ChatGPT.

The lawsuit was originally filed by the Indian news agency ANI last year. It claims that OpenAI used its content without permission to train ChatGPT.

Since then, news organizations including NDTV, the Indian Express, the Hindustan Times, and the Digital News Publishers Association (DNPA) have sought to join the case.

In the court filing, OpenAI said that it “has not used any of the applicants’ or DNPA members’ content” for its AI models.

The company also argued that it is not obligated to establish partnership agreements with these groups to use data available to the public.
