OpenAI delays open model release, no timeline announced
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced on July 11, that the company is indefinitely postponing the release of its open model, which was scheduled for next week.
The delay is due to ongoing safety tests and reviews of potential risks.
“We need time to conduct additional safety tests and assess high-risk areas. We are uncertain how long this process will take,” Altman said.
He highlighted the irreversible nature of releasing the model’s weights and stressed the importance of ensuring its readiness.
The open model is OpenAI’s first open model release in several years. Earlier reports indicated that it would offer reasoning capabilities similar to OpenAI’s o-series models.
OpenAI’s VP of Research, Aidan Clark, noted that while the model’s capabilities are noteworthy, the company is maintaining a high standard for open-source releases.
No timeline has been announced for the release.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ OpenAI’s cautious approach to model releases shows consistent pattern since 2019
This latest delay follows OpenAI’s established history of prioritizing safety over immediate releases.
In 2019, OpenAI made the controversial decision to withhold the full GPT-2 model, sparking significant debate in the AI community about the balance between open access and potential misuse risks1.
That earlier decision was driven by specific concerns about GPT-2’s capabilities for generating misleading content, with potential for astroturfing and fake news generation, concerns that have only intensified as models have grown more sophisticated1.
The pattern suggests OpenAI maintains a consistent philosophy of staged releases and thorough safety testing, even as competitive pressures in the AI landscape have intensified.
This approach stands in contrast to some competitors, such as Anthropic, which emphasizes safety in its messaging but employs different release strategies, while other companies prioritize rapid deployment or research breakthroughs2.
2️⃣ AI safety evaluation has evolved into a structured discipline with established frameworks
