OpenAI delays launch of its first open model
OpenAI’s first open-weight model in years will not be released until later this summer, CEO Sam Altman announced on X on June 10, 2025.
The release, initially planned for early summer, is now expected to occur after June.
Altman attributed the delay to advancements made by OpenAI’s research team, which require additional time to complete.
He noted that the development process has been extensive.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ OpenAI’s cautious approach mirrors its GPT-2 release strategy
This delay reflects OpenAI’s established pattern of carefully timing major model releases to balance innovation with responsible AI development.
In 2019, OpenAI used a staged release approach for GPT-2, initially withholding the full 1.5B parameter model due to misuse concerns before eventually releasing it after monitoring smaller versions 1.
That methodical release strategy allowed OpenAI to assess potential risks, gather community feedback, and develop detection methods for AI-generated content before fully releasing the model 2.
The current delay suggests OpenAI is again prioritizing quality and safety over speed, particularly important given this will be their first major open model release in years.
OpenAI’s policy director has previously emphasized learning from past AI developments to inform responsible practices 3.
The “unexpected and quite amazing” discovery mentioned by Altman likely triggered additional testing and evaluation phases, similar to those implemented during the GPT-2 release cycle.
2️⃣ Intensifying competition raises stakes for OpenAI’s open model debut
OpenAI’s delay comes amid a rapidly evolving landscape where competitors are accelerating their open model releases, increasing pressure on OpenAI to deliver something truly groundbreaking.
Just this week, Mistral released its Magistral reasoning models, continuing its aggressive push in the open model space after raising over €1.1 billion in funding 4.
