OpenAI debuts GPT-5.4 mini, nano to cut AI costs

OpenAI released GPT‑5.4 mini and GPT‑5.4 nano, aimed at faster, lower‑cost inference.

OpenAI said GPT‑5.4 mini improves coding and reasoning, and runs more than 2x faster.

GPT‑5.4 mini approaches GPT‑5.4 on benchmarks such as SWE‑Bench Pro and OSWorld‑Verified.

OpenAI described GPT‑5.4 nano as the smallest and cheapest GPT‑5.4 variant and recommended it for simpler task like classification, data extraction, and use cases including coding assistants and subagent systems.

GPT‑5.4 mini is available in the API, Codex, and ChatGPT  with lower pricing and 400k context window.

GPT‑5.4 nano is available only in the API, and OpenAI listed prices are US$0.20 per 1M input tokens and US$1.25 per 1M output tokens.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

The new models improve performance, though prices rise over earlier versions

  • GPT-5.4 mini comes close to the full GPT-5.4 on benchmarks, which adds clearer context to the performance gap.
  • On SWE-Bench Pro (a software-engineering benchmark), GPT-5.4 mini scores 54.38%, about three percentage points behind GPT-5.4 1.
  • Pricing also moves up from the previous generation. GPT-5.4 mini costs US$0.75 per 1M input tokens, which is three times GPT-5 mini at US$0.25. GPT-5.4 nano costs US$0.20 per 1M input tokens, which is four times GPT-5 nano at US$0.05 2.

This release suggests changes in how AI applications get built

  • The launch aligns with a broader move toward multi-agent systems, where a stronger model coordinates work split across smaller, cheaper subagents 1.
  • A common setup uses lower-cost models for routing or drafting, then a frontier model handles final analysis. In complex work such as insurance processing, this approach cut costs by more than 4x 3.
  • Anthropic and Google are also building cost-focused workhorse models for agentic tasks (AI systems that can plan and act across steps). Competition increasingly centers on running an efficient mix of models, rather than relying on one top-tier system 1.
