OpenAI confidentially files for US IPO
OpenAI said on June 8 it had confidentially filed for a US initial public offering with the Securities and Exchange Commission, giving the ChatGPT maker the option to list as AI companies seek more capital.
People familiar with the matter said OpenAI is working with Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley on a possible listing as soon as autumn.
However, OpenAI said it has not decided on timing and that “it may be a while” because some steps are easier as a private company.
It also plans a share tender sale in the coming weeks to give employees liquidity before any initial public offering.
A confidential filing lets companies submit draft registration documents to the Securities and Exchange Commission without immediate public disclosure.
The paperwork must generally become public at least 15 days before a roadshow or planned effective date.
The filing follows a March 2026 funding round that valued OpenAI at US$852 billion.
