OpenAI closes $122b round at $852b valuation
OpenAI said it has closed a US$122 billion funding round valuing the company at US$852 billion post-money, up from the US$110 billion in commitments it announced in February.
The round was co-led by SoftBank, with participation from investors including Andreessen Horowitz, DE Shaw Ventures, and Microsoft. The company said it raised an additional US$12 billion after opening the round to retail investors through bank channels.
OpenAI said that as of March, ChatGPT has more than 900 million weekly active users and over 50 million subscribers, and that it is generating US$2 billion in revenue per month after reporting US$13.1 billion last year.
The company said it is not yet profitable and has recently cut costs, including shutting some features and products such as its short form video app Sora, while Microsoft also participated without disclosing the amount.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
This record funding relies on a mix of non-cash deals
- Much of the money tied to OpenAI comes as credits or equipment from core tech partners, not cash 1.
- Microsoft’s early backing included Azure cloud credits, while Nvidia has pledged up to $100 billion that Reuters and others have described as being delivered through graphics processing units (GPUs), the chips used to train and run AI models 1.
- That approach spreads exposure across suppliers. Oracle, for example, has a five-year $300 billion compute agreement scheduled to start in 2027, which makes it a high-stakes counterparty for OpenAI 1.
- These deal structures help cover infrastructure obligations described as about $1.4 trillion, which tops OpenAI’s current revenue 2.
The cash burn drives hard choices and raises market risk
- OpenAI needs huge funding just to keep running. The Financial Times cited an HSBC analysis saying OpenAI must raise at least $207 billion by 2030 so it can keep losing money 3.
- The strain pushes tough decisions. Reporting and commentary say OpenAI has explored an advertising model, even though CEO Sam Altman previously called ads a “dystopic” and “trust-destroying moment” 3.
- So much money centered in one company can put the wider tech market at risk. CNBC said a serious OpenAI stumble could trigger spillover effects 2.
- Alphabet, Microsoft, Meta, and Amazon together are projected to spend nearly $700 billion on AI infrastructure in 2026, which is separate from OpenAI’s own results 2.
