OpenAI CFO says ChatGPT ads support wider AI access

OpenAI’s CFO Sarah Friar defended the company’s plan to test targeted ads in the free version of ChatGPT, stating it aims to support broader access to AI.

Friar said the move is necessary for OpenAI to develop a sustainable business model and noted that the company’s mission is to create artificial general intelligence (AGI) for the benefit of all, not just paying users.

OpenAI announced last week that some US users will see ads in ChatGPT, which has traditionally been free or subscription-based.

The decision to introduce ads marks a significant shift for the sector, which faces high costs for infrastructure and staffing.
