OpenAI buys smartphone camera maker Glass Imaging for $300m

OpenAI has bought Los Altos, California-based smartphone camera company Glass Imaging for more than US$300 million, according to a report.

Founded in 2019, Glass Imaging uses AI to improve smartphone photos by working around the physical limits of small camera sensors.

The startup had previously raised about US$30 million. Founders Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop are former Apple engineers who previously led the team that developed Apple’s Portrait Mode.

The deal gives OpenAI camera technology as the company has been linked to phones and other devices. It also follows OpenAI’s 2025 acquisition of Jony Ive’s company io for US$6.5 billion.
