OpenAI co-founder Brockman takes charge of product strategy
OpenAI has put co-founder and president Greg Brockman in charge of product strategy while CEO of AGI deployment Fidji Simo is on medical leave.
In a staff memo, Brockman told staff that OpenAI plans to combine ChatGPT and coding product Codex into one experience as it narrows its product focus.
Although Simo remains on medical leave, she collaborated with Brockman on these strategic changes. The company has already been talking about plans to combine ChatGPT, Codex, and its API into a single platform run by one core product team.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
OpenAI’s reorganization answers market share losses and IPO plans
- OpenAI is reshaping itself as Google Gemini’s share of AI web traffic rose from 5.7% to 21.5% over the past year, while ChatGPT fell from 86.7% to 64.5% 1.
- The change gives OpenAI a cleaner product lineup ahead of a possible IPO, or initial public offering, later this year. That may make the company easier for investors to assess 2.
- It also comes after senior exits. Those departures include Bill Peebles, who led Sora, OpenAI’s text-to-video tool. They also include Srinivas Narayanan, CTO of enterprise applications. That leaves OpenAI to focus its remaining leaders on one mission 2.
- With projected losses of US$14 billion in 2026, OpenAI faces pressure to turn its products into a business that can better hold users and make money before any public offering 1.
OpenAI is moving from chatbots toward autonomous agents
- Combining ChatGPT and Codex is meant to create one agentic product that can handle multi-step work such as scheduling or research, instead of only answering prompts 1.
- The AI race is moving toward tools that can become the main interface for a person’s wider digital tasks, rather than only return information 1.
- The shift leaves millions of software developers who depend on OpenAI’s application programming interfaces (APIs) waiting for details about how their work may be affected 1.
- OpenAI has not given a timeline for Codex integration or API customers, which adds to concerns about continuity. The company has also paused projects before, including Sora 1.
