OpenAI bans China-linked accounts over surveillance requests
OpenAI has banned several ChatGPT accounts linked to suspected Chinese government entities after users requested proposals to monitor social media conversations, according to its latest threat report.
The company said some users asked ChatGPT to design social media “listening” tools and other monitoring systems, violating OpenAI’s national security policy.
OpenAI also removed Chinese-language accounts that used ChatGPT for phishing and malware operations and to explore automation through China’s DeepSeek platform.
Additionally, the firm banned accounts tied to suspected Russian-speaking criminal groups that used the chatbot to help create malware.
Since launching public threat reporting in February 2024, OpenAI has disrupted over 40 malicious networks, adding that its models have not given threat actors new offensive capabilities.
