OpenAI appoints AI safety expert to Foundation board

OpenAI said it appointed Paul Christiano to the OpenAI Foundation Board and named him a non-voting observer on the OpenAI Group PBC board.

He will also join the Foundation Board’s Safety and Security Committee, which oversees safety and security practices across OpenAI, including OpenAI Group PBC.

Christiano is a senior tech adviser at the Center for AI Standards and Innovation within the US National Institute of Standards and Technology, an agency of the Commerce Department. He also founded the Alignment Research Center, a nonprofit focused on aligning advanced AI systems with human interests.

He led alignment research at OpenAI from 2017 to 2021 and contributed to reinforcement learning from human feedback, OpenAI said.

The appointment follows the governance changes established through OpenAI’s October 2025 recapitalization.
