OpenAI, Anthropic may use investor funds to settle lawsuits: report
OpenAI and Anthropic are considering using investor funds to address possible multibillion-dollar legal settlements, according to a Financial Times report.
Both companies face lawsuits from copyright holders who allege that AI systems were trained using their material without permission.
OpenAI, which reportedly worked with insurance broker Aon, has insurance coverage for AI risks up to US$300 million, though one source told the Financial Times the actual amount may be lower.
Sources cited by the Financial Times said this coverage would not cover potential losses from ongoing lawsuits.
OpenAI has also discussed options such as “self-insurance” by setting aside investor funding and creating a dedicated insurance entity.
Anthropic, an AI firm based in the US, is partly using its own funds to pay for potential settlements, the report said.
Last month, a US federal judge gave preliminary approval for Anthropic’s US$1.5 billion settlement in a copyright class action by authors.
