OpenAI, Anthropic eye AI services deals

OpenAI and Anthropic are separately using new ventures with private equity firms to acquire services companies that help businesses deploy AI.

The moves aim to secure engineers and consultants to roll out their models for corporate customers.

OpenAI’s venture is in advanced talks on three deals and is raising about US$4 billion from 19 investors including TPG, Bain Capital, and Brookfield Asset Management, with the vehicle set to be called The Deployment Company.

Anthropic is pursuing a similar strategy and has raised US$1.5 billion from investors including Blackstone, Hellman & Friedman, and Goldman Sachs.

Most of the capital expected to fund acquisitions of engineering and consulting firms.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

These ventures build direct sales routes into companies

  • OpenAI’s new venture, The Deployment Company, carries a US$10 billion valuation before new funding. OpenAI will own and control most of it 1.
  • The setup turns private equity partners into a ready sales path across more than 2,000 companies they own or advise 2.
  • Anthropic wants to put its Claude AI system into day-to-day operations at midsize businesses, including community banks and regional health systems 3.
  • The effort matters because both firms may move toward initial public offerings, or stock market listings, as soon as this year 2.

AI companies are taking on hands-on service work once seen as inefficient

  • The contest now centers on carrying deployment into the uneven routines of real companies, alongside model quality 3.
  • That need for hands-on rollout echoes Palantir’s approach of placing engineers inside customer operations to fit software to each setting 4.
  • The shift undercuts the idea that AI will run as a high-margin software business with less need for consultants. Business adoption still depends on skilled people 4.
  • That could reshape the tech pecking order, squeezing firms that handle basic setup while opening room for specialists in AI governance and trust 3.
