OpenAI, Anthropic, and Block have co-founded the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF) under the Linux Foundation, joined by Google, Microsoft, AWS, Bloomberg, and Cloudflare.

The foundation aims to develop open, interoperable standards for agentic AI systems as they move into real-world applications.

OpenAI has contributed AGENTS.md, a markdown-based file format for project-specific instructions, to support consistent behavior by AI coding agents across different repositories.

AGENTS.md, released in August 2025, is now used by over 60,000 open-source projects and frameworks.

Anthropic and Block have also contributed their own projects, including the Model Context Protocol and goose.

The AAIF will operate as a neutral, community-led platform to maintain and evolve these standards, with oversight from the Linux Foundation, a nonprofit known for stewarding major open-source projects.
