OpenAI adds Nubank founder, BNY CEO to boards

OpenAI said on July 22 it appointed David Vélez, founder and CEO of Nubank, and Robin Vince, chairman and CEO of BNY, a US financial services company, to the boards of the OpenAI Foundation and OpenAI Group PBC.

The appointments add financial services, governance, and nonprofit experience as OpenAI expands its commercial business and foundation work.

OpenAI’s current structure in October 2025 overhaul, when its for-profit arm became a PBC and the nonprofit was renamed the OpenAI Foundation.

Under the model, the Foundation retains control of the PBC while holding a 26% stake.

The two boards were initially nearly identical, but the latest appointments broaden oversight.

The same governance changes also left safety oversight with the nonprofit, including the authority to require mitigations or halt model releases.
