OpenAI adds advanced account security to ChatGPT

OpenAI has added an opt-in Advanced Account Security setting for ChatGPT on web, extending to Codex, to give users at higher risk of digital attacks stronger account protections from May 1.

The setting requires passkeys or physical security keys and disables password login, email, and SMS recovery.

It also shortens sign-in sessions, sends login alerts, and lets users review active sessions.

Chats are excluded from model training, and OpenAI support cannot recover locked accounts.

OpenAI also partnered with Yubico to offer discounted security key bundles to eligible users.

It also said individual members of its Trusted Access for Cyber program must enable the feature from June 1, 2026, unless their organization uses phishing resistant single sign-on.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

OpenAI places this feature within its wider cyber plan

  • The update sits inside OpenAI’s “Cybersecurity in the Intelligence Age” action plan 1.
  • The plan aims to equip trusted defenders with advanced AI. Members of the “Trusted Access for Cyber” program must turn on the feature by June 1, 2026, or file an alternative attestation 1.
  • OpenAI already relies on YubiKeys, physical security keys from Yubico, to protect employees and infrastructure 2.
  • Keeping OpenAI’s support team out of account recovery cuts the risk of social engineering attacks, where intruders pressure staff into handing over access to valuable accounts 1.

ChatGPT account security matters for AI agents

  • As AI tools move into daily work, ChatGPT accounts have become attractive targets that may store sensitive business and personal data, including “extortion-worthy information” 3.
  • The Yubico partnership starts work on protecting future AI agents that may carry out high-stakes tasks. Yubico argues those systems should verify “human intent” before an agent acts 4.
  • Yubico is also developing system designs that use a tap on hardware to approve an AI agent’s action, keeping a person in the loop for important decisions 4.
  • The move also strengthens OpenAI’s position against Anthropic, an AI startup that competes with OpenAI. Anthropic has faced a Pentagon supply chain risk designation. A judge recently blocked that designation and a White House directive to stop agency use of Anthropic products, though the government plans to appeal 5.
