OpenAI ad pilot tops $100m annualized revenue in 6 weeks

OpenAI’s pilot for ads in ChatGPT in the US has crossed US$100 million in annualized revenue within six weeks, as it looks to generate revenue to fund the high costs of developing the technology.

The company first outlined the plan in January, saying ads would appear for some users on the free tier and the lower-priced Go plan.

That ads would not change chatbot answers or share chat content with marketers.

A spokesperson said around 85% of users are eligible to see ads but fewer than 20% see them daily, and that the test will expand to more countries, including Australia, New Zealand, and Canada.

The company has over 600 advertisers and plans to launch self-serve ad tools in April.

It named former Meta ads executive David Dugan to lead its global ad solutions team.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

OpenAI’s ad revenue is a small raft in an ocean of cash burn

  • The $100 million annualized ad figure sounds big, yet it still falls short of the company’s funding needs.
  • OpenAI says ChatGPT has more than 800 million weekly active users, with most people using the service for free 1.
  • Running that scale costs a lot. An analysis of Microsoft’s filings puts OpenAI’s loss at $11.5 billion in a single recent quarter 2.
  • Covering the gap means earning more from nonpaying traffic. One forecast cited in coverage expects about $143 billion in cumulative negative free cash flow from 2024 to 2029 3.

A privacy-first ad model creates a high-stakes bet against the Google and Meta playbook

  • OpenAI says it will not sell user data or share conversations with advertisers, which narrows what its ad system can do 1.
  • Brands also will not get detailed readouts on actions like purchases. They will receive broad stats such as total views and clicks 4.
  • That setup leans on view-based pricing through cost per thousand impressions (CPM). OpenAI has reportedly asked around $60 per 1,000 views, about triple Meta’s typical rate 4.
  • The outcome depends on whether trust-driven ads can bring in serious money without the fine-grained targeting and conversion tracking that fueled larger rivals 3.
