OpenAI acquires technology talk show TBPN
OpenAI said it has acquired TBPN (Technology Business Programming Network), a media brand that runs a weekday live tech talk show hosted by entrepreneurs Jordi Hays and John Coogan, as it looks to expand how it communicates about AI.
The company said TBPN will sit within OpenAI’s strategy group, reporting to Chris Lehane, and that the show will keep editorial control over its programming, guests, and other decisions under the deal.
TBPN co-founder Hays said the outlet has sometimes criticized the AI industry and said moving from commentary to real impact in how AI is distributed and understood globally is important.
OpenAI did not disclose financial terms or whether TBPN’s existing distribution across platforms such as YouTube, X, and podcasts will change.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
OpenAI bought more than a talk show; it gained a direct line to tech’s elite
- TBPN calls itself “enthusiast media,” not traditional journalism, and says it has an “incredibly pro-tech” stance 1.
- Its pull comes from a narrow but influential crowd, described as “Silicon Valley power players” 1.
- That audience has brought in guests like Mark Zuckerberg (Meta CEO) and Satya Nadella (Microsoft CEO). After OpenAI announced its shift into a for-profit company, Nadella gave his first interview on that news to TBPN instead of outlets like CNBC or The Wall Street Journal 1.
- The show makes serious money. A Semafor report cited by The New Yorker says TBPN charges sponsors $87,000 a month, around $1 million a year, and it had 29 sponsors at the time 1.
The “go direct” media push now includes buying the platform
- The deal fits the “Go Direct” approach that skips traditional media. Vanity Fair says Lulu Cheng Meservey consulted TBPN on its launch strategy 2.
- Owning a channel also matches a wider move among tech and venture firms that run media operations to shape public stories, as described in Vanity Fair’s look at the tech-aligned media ecosystem 2.
- The purchase turns a supportive broadcast outlet into a business asset, even with promises of editorial independence 1.
- It may add a new Big Tech playbook where companies buy friendly media brands to lock in favorable coverage, as AI draws more scrutiny 2.
