OpenAI acquires team behind US business software startup Convogo

OpenAI is acquiring the team behind Convogo, a business software startup focused on automating leadership assessments and feedback for executive coaches and HR professionals.

The deal does not include Convogo’s intellectual property or technology, but brings its three co-founders—Matt Cooper, Evan Cater, and Mike Gillett—into OpenAI to work on AI cloud projects.

Convogo’s service will be discontinued as part of the transition.

The transaction is an all-stock deal, according to a source familiar with the matter.

This marks OpenAI’s ninth talent-focused acquisition in the past year, with most previous deals resulting in acquired products being shut down or integrated into OpenAI’s offerings.

OpenAI continues to use acquisitions to strengthen its technical capabilities and expand its team.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

OpenAI’s ‘AI cloud efforts’ likely means Azure infrastructure work, not a standalone platform

  • The Convogo team will work on “AI cloud efforts,” but OpenAI’s partnership with Microsoft Azure (Microsoft’s cloud computing platform) makes a standalone, OpenAI-branded cloud unlikely 12. Microsoft invested over $13 billion, provides Azure resources, and OpenAI agreed to purchase $250 billion of Azure services 1.
  • OpenAI seems focused on smoother enterprise rollouts that “bridge the gap” 2. That fits with pushing its models through Azure’s sales ties.
  • The path ahead looks clear. OpenAI leans on Azure instead of building its own cloud, which eases pressure on Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud (Alphabet’s cloud business) while boosting Microsoft’s standing with enterprise buyers.

Enterprise software vendors can capture users stranded by OpenAI’s pattern of acquiring then shutting down products

  • This is OpenAI’s ninth acquisition in a year, with most products being shut down or integrated 2. Convogo’s service will be discontinued 2, following a pattern where only io Products (a prior acquisition) continues its roadmap 2.
  • Software sellers and investors in business-to-business (B2B) markets can act now. Convogo says it helped “thousands” of coaches and partnered with the “world’s top leadership development firms” 2, so these clients now seek new leadership assessment tools.
  • Simple plan. Track OpenAI acquisition posts via sales, partnerships, and customer success teams. Contact affected users fast with migration offers. Ship integrations that keep products “OpenAI-compatible but standalone.” Target Convogo customers in executive coaching, human resources (HR) tech, or professional services automation with setup help and sharp pricing.
