OpenAI acquires Mac automation app maker

OpenAI has acquired Software Applications Incorporated, known for developing Sky, a natural language interface for Mac computers.

The deal will see the Sky team join OpenAI, according to an announcement on OpenAI’s blog.

Sky allows users to interact with their Mac through natural language and integrates with existing apps.

OpenAI said it plans to bring Sky’s macOS integration to ChatGPT.

The acquisition was approved by OpenAI’s independent transaction and audit committees.

An investment fund linked to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman held a passive stake in Software Applications Incorporated.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

How Sky reads your Mac’s windows and what is officially known

  • Sky reads any open window by tapping macOS’s windowing system. The support goes beyond screenshots. It works across AppKit (Apple’s legacy user-interface framework for macOS), SwiftUI (Apple’s modern UI toolkit), and Electron-based apps (desktop apps built with web technologies) 1.
  • Skyshot captures a screenshot and a textual representation of windows, which lets you run commands that reference what is on screen 1.
  • Permissions come first for actions in system apps. Multi-step actions appear for manual confirmation, so the user stays in control 1.
  • A waitlist is open. The app is set to launch this summer. Pricing is not yet announced, though a free component is expected 2.

Company IT teams should plan oversight as agentic AI reaches the desktop

  • OpenAI plans to bring Sky’s macOS integration into ChatGPT, which could eventually put AI with on-screen context and action features on company-managed Macs. Agentic AI refers to systems that can act on a user’s behalf.
  • IT departments will need audit trails that log which AI actions were taken and what data was accessed. They also need checks for policy violations. This creates demand for oversight tools on top of agentic systems.
  • Security companies plus integration platform providers (software companies that connect multiple business apps and automate workflows) can add controls that let companies set boundaries for AI use on computers. Those rules can block agents from accessing financial apps or exfiltrating customer data (moving data out without authorization) during automation.
