OpenAI to acquire developer tools maker Pierre for Codex

OpenAI said on November 5 that it will acquire Pierre Computer Company, a software tools maker, to build Git workflows for developers and coding agents in Codex.

Pierre’s Trees and Diffs libraries already support file navigation and code review in Codex, OpenAI said.

Pierre’s open-source projects will remain open source.

Customers can continue using Code Storage, which lets apps store code and track its history using Git, after the deal closes, while OpenAI works to integrate its features into Codex.

Pierre also publishes open-source code on GitHub. Another repository title indicates that a Bash tool’s Git commands are backed by code.storage.

OpenAI said the companies will remain independent until closing, subject to customary conditions, including regulatory approvals.

Separately, its Microsoft partnership came under UK scrutiny in 2023, and US senators launched an investigation into tech companies’ AI partnerships in 2025.
