Ola founder eyes $300m funding for AI startup Krutrim
Bhavish Aggarwal, founder of Ola, is seeking to raise up to US$300 million in equity and debt financing for his AI venture, Krutrim.
This fundraising target is lower than the previously planned US$500 million due to weaker investor interest.
Although no firm investment commitments have been secured for the funding round, Aggarwal remains hopeful about attracting major investors in the coming months.
Potential participants in the funding round may include Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, and SBI Capital Markets.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Indian AI startups face tougher funding environment compared to global counterparts
The downscaling of Krutrim’s fundraising target from $500 million to $300 million reflects the challenging investment landscape for AI startups in emerging markets.
This funding environment contrasts with the robust AI investment climate in the US, where private AI investment reached $109 billion in 2024 1.
Corporate investment in AI globally totaled $150 billion in 2024, highlighting the concentration of capital in established markets and companies 2.
Despite these challenges, Krutrim has managed to achieve unicorn status with a $1 billion valuation, demonstrating that innovative AI companies from emerging markets can still attract significant valuations 3.
The company’s total funding of $303.74 million to date showcases its ability to secure substantial capital despite operating outside the primary AI investment hubs 4.
2️⃣ Cross-company leverage becoming key financing strategy for serial entrepreneurs
Aggarwal has employed a notable financing strategy by committing 5.88 crore shares of his electric vehicle company Ola Electric to secure funding for Krutrim 5.
This cross-company leverage approach demonstrates how established entrepreneurs can use the equity in successful ventures to bootstrap new companies in adjacent technology sectors.
Ola Electric’s improving gross margins reported in January provided Aggarwal with the financial stability to pursue his AI ambitions through Krutrim 5.
