Ola Electric posts $104.4m loss, doubling from last year

Ola Electric announced a net loss of 870 crore rupee (US$104.4 million) for Q4 FY25, nearly doubling from 416 crore rupee (US$49.92 million) in the same quarter of the previous year.

Revenue from operations declined by 62% year-on-year, totaling 611 crore rupee (US$73.32 million). The company delivered 51,375 units in Q4 FY25, a significant decrease from 1.15 lakh (US$1,380) units in Q4 FY24.

The auto EBITDA margin fell to -78.6%, down from -9.3% a year earlier. The consolidated EBITDA margin was -101.4%, attributed to high provisioning costs and lower operating leverage.

Ola’s gross margin showed a slight improvement, increasing to 19.2%. This was aided by the adoption of its Gen-3 platform vehicles that offer enhanced power and range at lower costs compared to Gen-2 models.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Dramatic market share erosion undermines financial performance

Ola Electric’s financial challenges reflect its significant market position decline, as the company has fallen from market leadership to third place in just one year.

The company’s market share dropped from 49.2% in May 2024 to approximately 20% by May 2025, now trailing behind TVS (25%) and Bajaj Auto (22.6%) in the electric two-wheeler segment 1.

This market position decline was particularly severe in key EV states, with Ola’s share falling below 19% in December across nine of India’s top ten EV markets 2.

The company’s delivery numbers reflect this trend, with monthly registrations falling to 15,221 units in May 2025, closely matching the significant delivery drop reported in quarterly results 1.

These market dynamics explain why Ola is rapidly expanding its distribution network and launching new product categories like the Roadster X motorcycle, as urgent attempts to regain lost momentum in an increasingly competitive landscape.

2️⃣ Established automakers gaining ground in India’s EV transition

Traditional vehicle manufacturers like TVS and Bajaj are successfully challenging pure-play EV startups by leveraging their established manufacturing expertise and distribution networks.

Bajaj Auto has overtaken Ola Electric as the market leader in key states including Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, demonstrating how legacy automakers can effectively transition into the electric space 2.

The combined market share of TVS and Bajaj has grown to nearly 48% of the electric two-wheeler segment, showing that established players have successfully addressed early adoption challenges 3.
