1️⃣ Indonesia joins regional efforts for AI governance amid fragmented landscape
OJK’s new AI governance framework for banking represents a significant step in a region where AI regulation remains largely fragmented across ASEAN states.
This framework complements Indonesia’s earlier National AI Strategy launched in 2020, which focused broadly on sectors including health, education, agriculture, and now specifically addresses banking 1.
The approach aligns with ASEAN’s recent guide on AI governance that aims to facilitate regulatory alignment across member states while emphasizing principles such as transparency, fairness, security, and human-centricity 2.
Many APAC countries, including Indonesia, have been developing national AI strategies without comprehensive or enforceable regulations, creating potential challenges for cross-border financial services 3.
This banking-specific governance framework addresses a critical sector given that over 60% of financial institutions globally now leverage AI for decision-making, risk assessment, and automation 3.
2️⃣ Banking governance addresses critical needs in Indonesia’s rapidly digitizing financial landscape
OJK’s AI governance framework arrives during a transformative period where financial inclusion in Indonesia has nearly doubled in nine years, reaching 84% in 2023 4.
The Indonesian fintech sector has grown six-fold over the last decade, with over 366 active players in 2023 and payment solutions alone reaching over 60 million active users 5.
