OCBC to add WeChat Pay QR payments in China

OCBC will allow its app users to scan Weixin Pay (WeChat Pay) QR codes to pay merchants in China by Q1 2026.

The Singapore-based bank already lets users scan and pay through Alipay+ and UnionPay QR codes.

The expanded feature follows a new partnership with UnionPay International, announced on November 28, 2025.

OCBC said the new scan-and-pay option will let customers pay directly from their bank accounts while traveling in China.

The bank said payments will use real-time exchange rates, without extra fees.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

UnionPay QR gateway likely powers OCBC’s planned WeChat Pay acceptance

  • OCBC likely taps UnionPay International’s Cross-border Interconnection Payment Gateway (CPG) for WeChat Pay acceptance 1. UnionPay International is the cross-border arm of China UnionPay, the Chinese card network. The gateway entered trial in late July 2025 and offers a single set of QR interfaces. A bank connects once and users can scan merchant QR codes with different Chinese wallets without extra builds.
  • The CPG handled 1.981 million transactions worth RMB 427 million by September 11, 2025 1. OCBC announced plans after this infrastructure went live. The bank likely rides UnionPay’s systems instead of building direct WeChat Pay links. That path can speed copycat launches by other banks and also adds shared dependencies.

Southeast Asian PSPs can sell prebuilt cross-border QR modules to banks

  • Payment service providers (PSPs) and other payment vendors in Southeast Asia can ship standard cross-border QR packages that plug into China’s CPG gateway. UnionPay is running or building 19 interoperability projects in places like Vietnam plus Indonesia plus Cambodia 1. PSPs can reuse that template for banks that want OCBC-like features without one-off talks.
  • The Indonesia China pilot uses a multi party model 2. It includes four Indonesian switch networks. These are Rintis with ALTO and Artajasa plus Jalin. They run domestic interbank payment switching. PSPs that already run domestic QR switching can add cross-border modules by connecting to UnionPay’s standard interfaces 1. That lets them sell turnkey packages to banks. UnionPay’s work trims integration steps for PSPs. That lowers hurdles to enter this market and shifts focus to speed to market and customer experience.
