Production of Nvidia’s Thor chip, initially slated for mid-2024, has been postponed until mid-2025.

This delay is prompting automakers to reconsider their plans for new vehicle models.

Chinese EV maker Xpeng is reducing its use of the Thor chip, opting instead for its own Turing chip, which is in testing.

Meanwhile, Nio has decided not to include the Thor chip in future models, choosing to use its self-developed “NX9301” chip along with Nvidia’s Orin and Horizon Robotics technologies.

Other automakers such as BYD, Zeekr, and Ideal plan to adopt the Thor chip. However, Ideal is also developing its proprietary smart driving chip, named Schumacher, targeted for mass production in 2026.
