Nvidia-backed Nscale, BT partner to expand 14 MW AI data center

BT, a UK telecom company, said on April 23 that it will work with Nscale to build AI data center capacity at three BT sites in the UK, using Nvidia infrastructure.

The move aims to offer sovereign AI services, with data and compute kept under UK control.

Nscale plans to build up to 14 megawatts of capacity, while BT will provide site infrastructure and network connectivity for the facilities.

BT said the service is intended for public and private sector users that need to meet data residency and security requirements.

It also targets customers that want access to AI compute without building their own infrastructure.

The project fits into the UK government’s AI Opportunities Action Plan, and BT, Nscale, and Nvidia are also members of the UK Sovereign AI Industry Forum.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Nscale has a broader UK presence than its BT deal

  • The BT agreement covers up to 14 megawatts. Nscale is much larger, with a recent US$2 billion series C round that valued it at US$14.6 billion 1.
  • Its bigger UK plan is a 50-megawatt AI campus in Loughton, Essex. The site can expand to 90 megawatts, is due in Q4 2026, and Nscale calls it the UK’s largest AI supercomputer 2.
  • Nscale has also committed US$2.5 billion to the UK’s data center sector over the next three years, starting in January 2025 3.
  • The company also works with Microsoft and OpenAI on projects such as Stargate UK, a platform for sovereign AI workloads, or AI tasks kept within a country’s legal and data-control boundaries 2.

The deal offers a way to build national AI infrastructure

  • The setup pairs telecom groups with land and network assets, such as BT, with neocloud providers, or newer cloud firms built around AI computing 4.
  • Nscale was built for rising AI demand. It has lined up graphics processing unit (GPU) supply tied to Microsoft, including about 200,000 NVIDIA GB300 GPUs, and it designs sites with liquid cooling 5, 3.
  • BT brings the property and connectivity that AI data centers need. Both remain hard to secure for new projects.
  • Together, that mix gives other countries a faster route to sovereign AI capacity through established telecom or infrastructure groups plus newer AI infrastructure specialists 6.
