Nvidia wins CPU deal with AI cloud startup Modal

Nvidia has won CPU business from Modal, a New York-based cloud computing startup that rents computing power to AI developers.

Modal plans to use Nvidia’s Vera central processing units (CPUs) for AI agents after relying only on Intel and AMD for those workloads.

Modal said early tests showed Vera doubled the work its AI agents could do compared with current Intel and AMD chips.

Chief executive Erik Bernhardsson said Modal would keep a mixed fleet because newer chips from Intel and AMD could narrow the gap.

Nvidia says Vera is a next-generation data center CPU for AI factories, extending its push beyond graphics processing units (GPUs).

Modal’s planned adoption is an early sign Nvidia is challenging Intel and AMD in server CPUs.

Nvidia also said OpenAI, Anthropic, and Oracle plan to use Vera. Modal recently raised US$750 million at a US$15.75 billion valuation.
