Nvidia to invest up to $100b in OpenAI data center push
Nvidia will invest up to US$100 billion in OpenAI as the AI firm aims to build large-scale data centers powered by Nvidia’s processors, the companies announced on September 23.
OpenAI intends to deploy Nvidia systems requiring 10 gigawatts of power, equivalent to 4 million to 5 million GPUs, according to Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang.
The first US$10 billion installment will be made when the initial gigawatt of infrastructure is completed, a person familiar with the matter said.
Investments will be made at then-current valuations and phased in as the infrastructure is built.
The initial phase is set to go live in the second half of 2026 using Nvidia’s next-generation Vera Rubin systems.
Nvidia will be a preferred supplier of chips and networking equipment for OpenAI under the partnership.
This investment is separate from Nvidia’s previous deals and follows OpenAI’s recent US$500 billion valuation.
